Fanfare For The Common Man

On December 7th, The Day of Infamy, Roosevelt was confronted with the monumental task of focusing a somnolent, disparate, and reluctant nation to face a generational challenge to democracy. Internal dissent, aggressive and defiant, enervated national resolve to prepare for the inevitable storm. The weak, indecisive measures already in place failed to support our allies; The Nazi’s overran most of Europe, fascist Italians made inroads in Africa, the Japanese responded to our attempt to deprive them of raw materials by destroying a large portion of our navy. This was not a war to be fought with check books and special forces, instead it demanded a \"wake the hell up!\", full commitment by the entire nation. And the entire nation responded.

To encourage the will to sacrifice and to fortify national unity, the Roosevelt Administration developed several cultural initiatives. Vice President Henry Wallace gave a famous speech in early 1942 proclaiming the \"Century of the Common Man\". Eugene Goossens, the Conductor of the Cincinnati Orchestra, persuaded Aaron Copland to write a complementary fanfare, Copland took Wallace\'s name for his beautiful piece. Take a moment to listen; this is what Unity leading to Victory sounds like.

What is the future going to say about us? We\'re the generation of Hydroxychloroquine and Stop The Steal. Not only have we lost the courage to conduct democracy, we can\'t even count! An election that was a triumph of American can do spirit instead degenerated into insurrection and smirking lies at the hands of a wildly corrupt band of traitors. Lets stop this right here. Get out and vote folks. If you have an afternoon free, participate in a phone bank. If you\'re angry about women becoming hand maids, knock on a few doors. Get your act together and your ass in gear! I say it\'s time for common sense and common decency to prevail. Some generations are called upon to do extraordinary work. We weren\'t. All we had to do was sustain the Civil and Gender Rights that were obtained by great struggle when we were young - then maintain and extend the amazing physical engineering works that we were born into. We are failing. Let\'s start the long process to turn this around and make our good will known to the future.
